Digital transformation: harnessing opportunities, mitigating risks

In GIZ’s work on digital transformation, openIMIS plays an important role in making social protection systems more effective and accessible. As part of the Global Alliances for Social Protection program, openIMIS helps countries manage various social protection programs including health insurance - offering digitalsolutions that are open-source, scalable, and adaptable to local needs. As of July 2025, 34.6 million people in 14 countries benefit from openIMIS, which is a certified Digital Public Good and counts on an ever-growing community of developers and implementers.

Hosted by GIZ, the coordination desk of the global openIMIS initiative ensures there is constant knowledge exchange, offers support to new implementations worldwide, and keeps the open code up to date.
